In these three covers, Complex relates the cover image back to the main headline of the certain issue, which is seen more in depth in the second and third cover which include Kid Cudi and Lil Wayne, as in Cudi's magazine we can see a headline stating "Putting the pieces together" and in the Lil Wayne we see the words "Is Lil Wayne Crazy?" which is emphasized by the use of the strait jacket, showing just how "crazy" the artist is. In the Kid Cudi cover we can see a sort of puzzle effect being used, which relates back to the main headline of that issue. In the first issue shown, the contrasting colors of black and white help create a sense of conflict in the magazine, which might spur viewers to want and read it to find out what this conflict could be about.
For my magazine, I am going to be focusing on the cultural impact hip-hop has added on our society over time, from the fashion business to politics. I am going to be focusing my style heavily on Complex Magazine, as they mainly focus on what is currently happening in the hip-hop world and the impact certain artists are making outside of music. I plan on using many similar styles from Complex, such as their iconic masthead always being at the top of the page, no matter who or what is on the cover. I will also be using a heavy photoshopped design for my cover, a many of Complex's covers consist of different artists being photoshopped doing an action or related to some sort of headline on the side. I plan on remaining consist to this style by Complex yet want to make my magazine seem and feel original and not like a carbon copy, so I will attempt to distance myself from their font style and such, as it is very iconic.
